Generation Z: Take Control of Your Financial Future

8.7.2025 - Financial Education

GEN Z GROUP

If you were born between 1997 and 2012, you're part of Generation Z — a group entering adulthood with digital fluency, entrepreneurial drive and, yes, financial anxiety. You’re eager to build wealth and independence, but you’re also facing real challenges: rising living costs, student debt and uncertainty about long-term financial stability.

According to a 2023 EY Gen Z segmentation study reported by Forbes, more than half of your generation is extremely worried about not having enough money, and nearly 70% say their financial situation isn’t looking good. At Gateway, we’re here to help you navigate these challenges and build a secure financial future.

Creating a realistic budget is the foundation of financial success. Start by tracking your income and expenses, distinguishing between wants and needs, and prioritizing saving. Experts recommend building an emergency fund with three to six months of expenses in a high-yield savings account.

A 2025 article from Ameris Bank notes that many Gen Zers are already saving between 1% and 20% of their income and are increasingly using tools like the 50/30/20 rule to manage their finances.

Tip: “Pay yourself first” by setting up automatic transfers to savings before spending on non-essentials.

Credit can be a powerful tool, but only if you use it responsibly. Aim to:

- Pay your bills on time

- Keep your credit utilization low

- Avoid unnecessary debt

A strong credit history can help you rent an apartment, secure a loan and even land a job.

More than half of your generation already holds investments, including stocks and cryptocurrencies. But if you feel unsure about how investing works, you’re not alone. Research from the CFA Institute and FINRA Foundation shows that 82% of Gen Z investors in the U.S. began investing before age 21, often influenced by social media and fear of missing out. Yet, lack of financial education remains a major barrier.

Start small with a certificate of deposit and take time to learn the basics of risk and diversification. It can go a long way.

Reminder: Time is your greatest asset. Compound interest rewards early investors.

We’re committed to helping you turn financial uncertainty into opportunity. You’re ready to take control of your financial future, and you don’t have to do it alone. With the right tools, guidance and support, you can build lasting wealth and security. Gateway is proud to be your trusted partner on that journey.
